I have more information on my great-great-great grandfather, James
Witherspoon. He stated on his passenger lsit that he was from Knockbracken
near Castlereagh which is in County Down. He and his family were expelled
from Ireland in 1804 because James had hidden a rebel leader, Thomas
Russell, during the 1798 United Irishmen's Rebellion. When he was arrested
by the British he refused to give any information and he and his oldest son,
John were held in Kilmainham for a year. When the British felt that would
get nothing from him they let him go with the proviso that he leave Ireland.
He arrived in New York in September of October of 1804 with his wife
Margaret, sons John, James and Henry and daughter Elizabeth (my great-great
grandmother). There was another daughter named Rosanna but I didn't find her
on the passenger list. I found this information in several books about the
1798 Rebellion. James was born about 1755. John married a woman named Ann
and had sons named James, John and William. James married Margaret Roberts
and had children named James, John, Margaret, Louisa, Mary and Elizabeth.
Margaret marrid Richard Fisher and Louisa married William VanWart. Henry
married Rachel Savhard. Elizabeth married Nathaniel McKee. Rosanna married
Andrew Bowden and they had sons named John, Andrew and McLeod.
