Note for:   James H. Shaw,   ABT 1820 - BEF 1860         Index

Individual Note:
From Tom Blake, Aug 2007: James and Louise were probably married in Fort Smith while it was still part of Crawford County. All marriage records for Crawford County prior to 1877 were destroyed in a fire. Sebastian County was created from part of Crawford in 1851. Search of numerous marriage CDs has not found this marriage.

On line census transcription for City of Fort Smith, Crawford County, Arkansas for 1850, on page 292B, shows James H. Shaw, age 33, gem maker and polisher born in NY, Louisa P. Shaw, 20, born in Switzerland, Sophia M. Shaw, 2, and James H. Shaw 4 months, both born in Arkansas. It is not marked they are able to read and write, which seems unlikely. They are listed three pages away from Michael and Marie Mayers.

Louisa P. Shaw is shown in an online transcription of the 1860 census of the free inhabitants in the "Creek Nation", which was "west of Arkansas" as a 29 year old white woman born in Switzerland and working as a seamstress, with her 10 year old Arkansas born son, James H. Shaw. The fact that her spouse James is not with her and has not otherwise been found in 1860 indicates he could have been deceased by then. Likewise, the absence of daughter Sophia from the 1860 households of her mother and of her aunt Marie Mayers, coupled with her not being found in any later records, may indicate Sophia died before 1860.

The 1860 AR and TX census indexes were checked with no highly likely matches for James, but three named James in AR (Fulton, Saline and Searcy Counties) were checked and were not our people. Ancestry.com does not have 1860 indexed for Arkansas.

In a letter to Marie Perey Mayers in Texas, from 1866, dated apprently February, William Mayers closed by telling her to give his love to Mrs. Shaw, without mentioning James Shaw, which could be an indication James was deceased or the Shaws were divorced by then. An online marriage index for Lamar County, Texas, shows a marriage of an S. [probably mistaken and actually an L] P. Shaw to a Mr Shearon on January 2, 1867, which would be a further indication the marriage to James was over, either due to divorce or his death. Further searching needs to be done to find the divorce or death.

Louise is found on the TX 1870 census with her new spouse.
