Today we left Villa Escaleras and drove north toward the highlands. It was a good highway that occasionally but abruptly narrowed to single lane bridges. A coastal pasture- the colors and forms recall Africa On the banks of the Tarcoles River we saw first a Jesus Christ lizard running across the water and then a herd? flock? pod? of crocodiles!

Near the river we went for a two-hour walk through the Carara Reserve and saw toucans, anteaters, agoutis and armadillos. Also some remarkable upland and riparian forests. We reached Puntearenas at sunset and found a stunning view across the Golfe to the Nicoya Peninsula. From there we merged with the Sunday afternoon traffic back to the highlands.
